Description

Drawing Process:

For “The First Swift Unicorn” drawing, my process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with a light colored mechanical pencil or graphite to draft the idea. I follow up with several shades of different wax colored pencils to add depth and a sense of atmosphere to the drawing. Then graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add details. The colored sketch remains intact and subtly visible beneath the graphite of the final drawing. This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the journey from sketch to finish with each layer of color.

“The First Swift Unicorn” Drawing Story:

“Third born of the “Mother Tree”, The “Swift” unicorns blossomed from tiny flowers that grew quickly on her branches. With elongated legs like twigs, and a powerful horn that was as long as their entire petite frames, the Swift unicorns were gifted with speed, agility, and endless energy! Their speed and competitive nature would serve them well in the difficult days to come during Terratoff’s first age….

During the “Great March” out of the “Dark Lands”, The Faun Queen led the uncorrupted “Winnow” creatures of magic out of the tainted lands being savaged by the “Rotten” plague! They were fleeing the darkness spreading by the Mother Tree herself as she spawned new and twisted creatures of magic infected with “The Rott”. As the corrupted creatures pursued the Winnow marchers through the darkness, the Swift unicorns were called upon to chase away the unyielding threat!

The Swift may be small, but they are still mighty and quick on their feet! The Swift unicorns would race through the Rotten hoard, piercing as many enemies as possible with their incredibly long horns. If a challenger was too large for them to overcome, the Swift would draw their attention away from the march, and lead them on an endless race through the forests. This tactic became known as “The Last Run” for sadly, many Swifts never returned from the chase.

The Swift of today honor their ancestors that fell in the darkness by holding massive races during their coronation ceremonies. Only the fastest Swift are deemed worthy to lead their herds, for it will be their duty to lead an unconquerable enemy away… risking it all for their kin on a “Last Run”…”
