Description
Drawing Process:
For “The First Rotten Unicorn” drawing, my process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with a light colored mechanical pencil or graphite to draft the idea. I follow up with several shades of different wax colored pencils to add depth and a sense of atmosphere to the drawing. Then graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add details. The colored sketch remains intact and subtly visible beneath the graphite of the final drawing. This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the journey from sketch to finish with each layer of color.
“The First Rotten Unicorn” Drawing Story:
“Once the “Rotten Plague” took hold of the Mother Tree, she became twisted with evil from the inside out. Her soul was consumed with darkness in silence, hiding her inner transformation for a time. But the fruit of her branches soon revealed the inner corruption to all…
The fourth and last breed of unicorn born of the Mother Tree was the “Rotten” Unicorn. It is common knowledge that unicorns are immune to the plague that taints the soul and twists the flesh… however, the immunity comes from the magic of the unicorns alicorn horn. Should the horn of a unicorn break, their immunity is also shattered with it.
When the first Rotten unicorn blossomed from the tree, it appeared a normal healthy creature, save for the broken horn on top of its head. Before that day, nobody had ever seen a damaged unicorn horn, and so they assumed it nothing more than an unusual birth defect. Alas, they failed to see the darkness growing within, twisting the unicorn’s heart to darkness and filling their mind with the whispers of their Mother’s will. Before long the Rott took its hold on the poor creature, and it’s body became a disfigured husk of its former beauty. With glowing eyes and thorny growths, the unicorn became the first of its kind to join the Rotten hoard that eventually pursued the “Winnow” out of their home.
Every unicorn dreads the day that their horn may break, for it is their only protection from the Rotten call. Other creatures of magic grow up constantly hearing the dull song of the Rott, and learn to resist the temptations as they grow. However, for the unicorn their immunity also blocks the whispers of the Rott from their minds. Once their horns are gone their lack of experience resisting the call makes them extremely vulnerable to quick corruption. Though it is not guaranteed that a unicorn with a broken horn will become Rotten, many have come to believe that it’s just a matter of time…”
