Description

Drawing Process:

For “The First Dark Unicorn” drawing, my process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with a light colored mechanical pencil or graphite to draft the idea. I follow up with several shades of different wax colored pencils to add depth and a sense of atmosphere to the drawing. Then graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add details. The colored sketch remains intact and subtly visible beneath the graphite of the final drawing. This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the journey from sketch to finish with each layer of color.

“The First Dark Unicorn” Drawing Story:

“The “Dark” unicorns were the second breed born of the “Mother Tree”. They first emerged from blossoms on her branches that bloomed in the light of the moon. The large nocturnal creatures were gifted with a kind and quiet nature, as well as a strong connection to the moon and constellations. Their calm temperament and understanding of the stars proved invaluable to the Faun Queen once the march out of the cursed “Dark Lands” began…

When the realm became tainted by the “Rotten” plague, the Faun Queen of the uncorrupted “Winnow” creatures of magic lead a “Great March” out of the Dark Lands, hoping to lead her followers to a new home untouched by the “Rott”. But the path was dark and filled with unknown dangers. The Queen became lost in the twisted forests and couldn’t see the path ahead. She called upon her friends, the Dark unicorns for help. Their enchanted eyes could still see the starlight beyond the gloom, and helped guide the Queen in the way she should go.

Their journey was very, very long and frightening. The corruption kept the sunlight at bay, making the darkness all consuming during the harsh pilgrimage. And yet, the Dark unicorns kept calmly guiding the march, bringing hope and a kind word to every weary soul. Were it not for the Dark unicorns, the Winnow may have been lost in the darkness forever.

Today, Dark unicorns enjoy quite lives hiding in the shadows of the night sky with their families. But should a lost souls need a kind heart to guide them, a friendly Dark unicorn just might appear.”
