Description
Painting Process:
For “The Leviathan” painting, my process includes several steps. I begin with a sketch that I develop into a finished drawing using wax based archival colored pencils, and graphite. Next the drawing is scanned, then printed out at a low opacity onto hot press watercolor paper. Now the painting begins! Watercolor is the first layer to establish the mood, tones, and color scheme. Then I shift back and forth between oil based colored pencils and gouache to refine and render the painting. I strive to select vibrant and archival pigments throughout my process. Check out my listing photos to see examples of the paints, brushes, and other materials I used! I hope you enjoy “The Leviathan” painting!
“The Leviathan” Painting Story:
“Long ago… life was first created in Terratoff by “The Mother Tree”, who bore magical creatures as the fruit of her enchanted branches. For a time all was well and her children thrived in their garden, until one day when their beloved mother began to rot. Refusing to die, the balance of nature was disrupted and her soul became corrupted. The curse passed on to her new children, who were born as twisted monsters hell bent on spreading this terrible plague. The untainted “Winnow” magical creatures were desperate to escape the corruption that would “rot them from the inside out”, and so they fled from the lands of their birth. The majority of the kingdom followed the faun Queen into the woods, while a few followed her sister, a wise and powerful witch, into the sea.
Each of the “Good Sea Witch’s” followers willingly accepted her enchantment, sacrificed their legs for tail fins in order to live in her new underwater kingdom. At first it seemed that they had escaped the Rotten army, and lived peaceful lives under the ocean waves… but the merciless “Rotten Mother” had other plans for her traitorous children…
Unwilling to let any of her offspring escape from her influence, the Rotten Mother decided to create a new Rott that would hunt down the children of the sea. As punishment for the extreme measures they took to flee from her gaze, she decided that this Rott would have to be more terrifying than any she had ever created before! She commanded her armies to capture a giant sea wyvern and tear off its wings! The tragic broken creature was then kept captive in the Rotten lair while the corruption consumed him, transforming the dragon into a blood thirsty sea serpent! When the transformation was complete the “Leviathan” was released into the sea, and immediately descended upon the ocean kingdom to terrorize and spread the Rott among the merfolk. Many Winnow were lost before the Good Sea Witch was able to fight off the monster, sending it into the shadowy depths of the sea. Though the Leviathan had been successfully banished the damage was done, and the survivors knew they would never be truly safe from the Rott again.
To this day the Leviathan still haunts the Terratoff oceans, waiting to pounce on lost ships and lonely creatures of magic that wander into its territory. He circles around the Sea Witch’s kingdom by night, waiting for the chance to strike once more. The merfolk huddle in the coral and underwater caverns as the sun goes down, knowing full well that swimming in the open water at night means certain doom…”
