Painting Process:

For “The Birth of the Terratoff Kirin” painting, my process includes several steps. I begin with a sketch that I develop into a finished drawing using wax based archival colored pencils, and graphite. Next the drawing is scanned, then printed out at a low opacity onto hot press watercolor paper. Now the painting begins! Watercolor is the first layer to establish the mood, tones, and color scheme. Then I shift back and forth between oil based colored pencils and gouache to refine and render the painting. I strive to select vibrant and archival pigments throughout my process. “The Birth of the Terratoff Kirin” Painting Print Story:

“During the reign of the great “Queen Gloria”, peace was known in the realm of Terratoff for the first time in an age. The terrible twisted creatures known as “The Rott” were largely banished to the dark lands, and the kingdom of the pure “Winnow” creature finally began to rebuild. During her time on the throne, an incredible new creature emerged for the first time from the enchanted woods. This creature known as “The Kirin” is believed to mark the beginning of a new age of serenity and prosperity in Terratoff.

The first Kirin was born of a sacred covenant between unicorn and dragon kin, a promise pledged after the ultimate sacrifice was made. A young mother dragon gave her life to rescue a herd of unicorn that were being attacked by a vicious Rotten dragon. Were it not for her aid, the unicorns would have surely perished in its flames. After vowing to repay the debt of kindness, the leader of the unicorn herd found and protected the mother dragon’s orphaned egg. She blessed the unborn creature with her horn, hoping to grant it strength and wisdom… but the magic took shape in a way she never expected! It molded and shaped the creature within into something new and exciting. Thus the first Kirin of Terratoff was born! The unicorn raised and cherished the hatchling as her own, and paved the way for more Kirin kind to be created.

Since the first Kirin appeared much has been learned about their kind, though they are still a rare and unique breed of magical creature. Both equally unicorn and dragon kin, the Kirin inherits the best of both branches of their lineage. Each Kirin is born with the body and everlasting vitality of a unicorn, along with the heart and strength of a dragon. Because of the unique pairing and circumstances of their birth, Kirin are born sterile and unable to breed to make new Kirin. But as more unicorn adopt and raise abandoned dragon eggs, the Kirin of Terratoff are growing in numbers and thriving throughout the land!”
