Description

Painting Process:

For the “Mother of Unicorns” digital painting, my process includes several steps. I begin with a sketch that I develop into a finished drawing using graphite pencils. Next the drawing is scanned and redrawn by hand in several phases using a cintiq tablet in photoshop. After a finished line drawing is created, I begin adding flat colors to set the mood and create a base layer to work on. Then I add layers of shadows and highlights to give the painting depth and atmosphere. The last phase is “rendering” where I get to zoom in and add all kinds of delightful fine details. In the end, a vibrant and detailed whimsical painting is created!

“Mother of Unicorns” Painting Story: 

“Unicorns represent a plethora of meanings across many cultures, for this piece I decided to create another version of the age old relationship between unicorns and women. Often a symbol of love, unicorns and maidens have been represented together in art time and time again.

In my narrative here, the “Mother of Unicorns” tends to and prepares the unicorn for the day he will meet his beloved maiden, at which time the mother will relinquish the Unicorns golden chain to his beloved. From then on they belong to each other. I wanted the mother to appear regal and pure to mirror the majesty and innocence of the unicorn.

In Terratoff, these women are known as “Unicorn Maidens”. They dedicate their life to caring for the herd, in exchange the unicorns bless her with vitality and healing magic.”
