Description

Drawing Process:

For “The Mermacorn Coronation” drawing, my process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with a light colored mechanical pencil or graphite to draft the idea. I follow up with several shades of different wax colored pencils to add depth and a sense of atmosphere to the drawing. Then graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add details. The colored sketch remains intact and subtly visible beneath the graphite of the final drawing. This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the journey from sketch to finish with each layer of color.

“The Mermacorn Coronation” Drawing Story:

“Deep in the oceans of Terratoff, there lives a gentle creature of magic known as “The Mermacorn”. With the body of a unicorn and the tail of a merfolk, mermacorns are the rarest of all the enchanted creatures of the sea. Though a wide and perilous ocean separates them from their kin upon the shore, these mystical creatures still have much in common with the unicorns of the land.

Despite their few numbers, mermacorns are extremely powerful and highly respected magical creatures. They continue to honor the same traditions and customs that the
surface unicorns above them began long ago… but with a maritime twist to the festivities!

Only the mermacorns invite outsiders to their coronation ceremonies, the sacred rite that determines who the next leader of their herd shall be. While surface creatures must watch the unicorns march from afar, the mermacorns call upon “The Good Sea Witch” to bestow a wreath of golden shells and kelp around the neck of their new shepherd. Once the neck-piece is adorned, the mermacorns and their friends dance in the waves together, leaping high into the air as passing ships catch glimpses of their celebrating!”
